With oil and gas production taking place in wells of greater depth, severely corrosive environments have developed from combining hydrogen sulphide, chlorides and carbon dioxide with high pressure and high temperature.

Under these conditions, wirelines of conventional carbon steels and lower alloyed stainless steels are limiting. However, wirelines made from special alloyed stainless steels have proven to be the most effective alternative. Although the initial cost is greater, significant savings can be achieved when comparing losses incurred by wireline breakage and lost production time.

The recent Sandvik development in slickline technology off ers a new level of cost efficiency to oil and gas companies.
The new bright-drawing process produces
stainless steel and nickel alloy wire
with a bright, lustrous surface, free from
polishing marks and fissures. Reduced friction and improved corrosion resistance will prolong slickline life and reduce downtime, thereby benefitting customer productivity and profitability.

Longer life expectancy

Comparative tests have shown a minimum
of 15% better fatigue results on bright lines, compared to lines with a matt surface.
Testing is carried out in a standardized
manner. Raising and lowering a length of
line over a 7” pulley wheel comprises one
complete cycle. A 400 lb load is suspended
on the line and the test is complete when the line fails.

A money-saver

The improved performance of Sandvik’s
bright slicklines will drastically reduce
downtime caused by wire-wool problems
in the stuffing box. The improved durability means that fewer lines will need to be purchased.
Savings will be made on spooling and installation costs. Minimized friction
will improve the life expectance of pulleys,
sheaves and counters.
No more "wire-wool"
Using bright slicklines will reduce friction in the stuffing box. Friction is a contributing factor to the occurrence of “wire-wool” in the box. Stopping production to clean or replace slicklines in blocked stuffing boxes can be extremely expensive.
Improved corrosion resistance
Even stainless steel and nickel alloy lines can be susceptible to corrosion attack in some particularly aggressive environments. Our bright, smooth surface has greatly reduced the microscopic pores, which can lead to pitting.
Beginning in 2009, most of the Sandvik
slickline range will be offered with a bright surface.
